Springfield College Becomes Member Agency Of The Food Bank Of Western Massachusetts

Springfield, MA (02/15/2024) — Springfield College has become the first private college in Western Massachusetts to become a member agency of the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts.

Beginning in February of 2024, Springfield College will be included in the region's food assistance network, establishing itself as just the fourth higher education institution in Western Massachusetts to become involved.

"Becoming a member of the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts ensures the sustainability of our Pride Pantry so it will continue to be a resource to the Springfield College community for years to come," explained Charlene Elvers, the Director of the Center for Service and Leadership & Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement at Springfield College.

The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts is a proud member of Feeding America, a national network of more than 200 food banks. Since 1982, the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts has been feeding those in need and leading the community to end hunger and providing food for members in Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire.

In 2018, Springfield College started the Pride Pantry to assist both undergraduate and graduate students who were facing food insecurity. Approximately 375 students use the pantry on a regular basis, and with the expanded membership with the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, the Pride Pantry will be more sustainable for the future. Additionally, an additional benefit to the membership includes having access to representatives who can assist Springfield College students with understanding and potentially taking advantage of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

Springfield College is an independent, nonprofit, coeducational institution founded in 1885. Approximately 3,500 students, including 2,050 full-time undergraduate students, study at its main campus in Springfield, Mass. Springfield College inspires students through the guiding principles of its Humanics philosophy - educating in spirit, mind, and body for leadership in service to others.
