SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Springfield College Department of Physical Therapy Chair Julia Chevan has been selected by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to receive a Fulbright Specialist Program award. Dr. Chevan will complete a project at Kathmandu University in Nepal in May of this year with a focus on the further development of physiotherapy education in Nepal.
Dr. Chevan is one of over 400 U.S. citizens who share expertise with host institutions abroad through the Fulbright Specialist Program each year. Recipients of Fulbright Specialist awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, demonstrated leadership in their field, and their potential to foster long-term cooperation between institutions in the U.S. and abroad.
Dr. Chevan started her career in physical therapy in 1985, and the themes of her 30 years of work as a physical therapist have always included a focus on health justice and global health issues. In 2011, Dr. Chevan was a Fulbright scholar to Rwanda, where she taught and conducted research with colleagues at Kigali Health Institute. Her global health work has included teaching and mentoring therapists in the United States, Armenia, Liberia, Rwanda, and Haiti.
The Fulbright Specialist Program provides a short-term, on-demand resource to international host institutions, giving them greater flexibility in how they participate with Fulbright. Fulbrighters address critical global issues in all disciplines while building relationships, knowledge, and leadership in support of the long-term interests of the United States.
